Coimbatore: Providing 'Smart mobility' - smart solutions for transportation, is an important component under the Coimbatore Smart City mission.
To achieve smart mobility and to develop a Non-Motorized Track (NMT) for pedestrians, CCMC signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the German International Agency (GIZ).
GIZ has identified a 300-km long Non-Motorized Track (NMT) network in the city and submitted a draft to the City Corporation. The draft proposal was submitted to the civic body in a workshop conducted on Tuesday, at a private hotel, here. The workshop tilted ‘Setting up a sustainable mobility agenda for Coimbatore’ was inaugurated by the District Collector, K Rajamani, with all the stake holders participating. The workshop was conducted as a part of the ongoing discussions with GIZ for the past one year. GIZ has been studying the existing transport system of the city and conducting several meetings with all the stake holders comprising of the Traffic Police, Directorate of Town and Country Planning, Regional Transport Office and NGOs, for the past one year.
Commenting on this, a senior Corporation official said, "GIZ has identified a 300-km long network across the city, covering major parts of the city. Pedestrian paths, cycle tracks and Digital signals were suggested by the company. The proposal was to develop smart mobility solutions on the existing roads itself. Initially, there is a proposal to consider Oppanakkara Street and Cross Cut Road for implementing the smart mobility solutions suggested by the German company. But now, it is in a preliminary state, and we have to identify allocation of funds and a lot of other practical considerations. But CCMC will surely consider this proposal,"added the official.
If the proposal is implemented, Coimbatore roads will pave the way for being known as pedestrian-friendly, since platforms across the city can be reclaimed, free of vendors. CCMC will hold further discussions with the Traffic Police to ascertain if the proposal can be implemented.
